Joins R-LABS’ Industry Issue + Transformation Council: Advancing Industry Innovation in Real Estate and Housing

Toronto, ON. September 12, 2023 – R-LABS – The Real Estate Industry Venture Builder – announces today that Thomas Mueller of the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) has joined its team as the newest member of its Industry Issue + Transformation Council (I+T Council).

The I+T Council is made up of trusted industry leaders with deep and diverse expertise who understand industry problems, surface potential obstacles, and draw connections with other issues. The I+T Council works closely with R-LABS’ teams to provide input at every stage of its venture process. R-LABS and the I+T Council help to more effectively align and provide industry innovation across the real estate and housing sub-sectors.

Thomas Mueller has been at the forefront of the green building movement, driving meaningful change within the industry for many years. As the Founding Director, President, and CEO of the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC), he has played a pivotal role in advancing green building practices and promoting environmental stewardship across Canada. His dedication to green building design and construction, building retrofit, and sustainable real estate development align perfectly with R-LABS’ goals and values. He brings this expertise to the Council, making him an invaluable asset to R-LABS’ organization and mission. “We are excited to welcome Thomas Mueller and the Canada Green Building Council to the R-LABS Partnership,” said George Carras, CEO of R-LABS. “Thomas’ experience, unique capabilities and passion for a more sustainable future will be very helpful to the LAB in delivering greener industry innovation.”

In his role with CAGBC, Thomas oversees the Council’s national green building strategy, market development, and policy initiatives. His primary focus is on implementing market-based solutions to scale up investment in green building across all industry segments, with a recent emphasis on advancing climate action and transitioning the building sector to low carbon performance. With his direct involvement in climate change and sustainability solutions, Mueller works closely with senior government officials and industry leaders, driving impactful change within the industry.

As a well-known advocate for green building design and construction, building retrofit, and sustainable real estate development, Thomas has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work in the field. His pivotal role in the development of the industry’s inaugural zero carbon standards in 2017 provided the guidance necessary for decarbonization efforts in the building sector.

Thomas is an internationally recognized authority and speaker on green building, having served as a board member for the World Green Building Council and the Green Business Certification Institute. He also served as CEO of the Green Business Certification Inc. Canada (GBCI CA), delivering advanced building performance standards to the industry. Currently, he actively supports the transition towards green, zero-carbon, and resilient buildings and cities through his involvement in the WorldGBC’s global CEO network and the Building Energy Innovators Council (BEIC). “I’m really looking forward to the partnership with R-LABS,” said Thomas. “We have the same values, believe in the same causes, and hold the same dedication to driving forward the sustainability of the building industry.”

Thomas holds an undergraduate Degree in Geography, Planning, and Applied Ecology from the Ludwig-Maximilian University; a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo; and has an ESG Global Competent Boards Designation.
